The article “Eating disorders and the media”, article speaks upon how social media creates an image for what is desirable and attractive. Many victims of eating disorders are woman, especially adolescents and teens. As mentioned in the article, “Over half of all dieters are not overweight, which means that of all people currently dieting, 1 in every 2 doesn’t need to” (Jade, 2012). This proves how the image of the “perfect” body has caused improper perceptions on what beauty is. Not only does it mention dieting but also how advertisements convince people into buying their unhealthy foods leading to obesity throughout time. Obesity is not only achieved by advertisements of healthy food, but also by binge-eating which occurs to many people without them knowing, Binge-eating is a consumption of food throughout a small period even if one is not hungry or is too full. I, myself suffer from binge-eating because of my necessity in looking like those Instagram models. Social media has blinded me and has made me feel as if I am not the ideal woman I should be, which has led to many diets and binge-eating.

Katelyn Gaffney speaks upon negative influences the media (social) has on fashion industries and the bodies of women which leads to mental and health issues, in her article “Transactions on Medical Imaging”. The author is writing in the perspective of someone who has gone through the issues she is speaking upon which concerns her about possible issues future generations may face. Throughout time, the idealistic image of what is attractive in the media has changed as history changed. Media has created new ideas of what beauty is and has created what is and is not acceptable in society. Who in particular created the idea of what is or is not acceptable as a body image for women? Women feel pressured into fitting into society more than men do; although, they too have their partake in the health issue factors. You can see how 13 year olds now are completely different than how 13 year olds were five years ago. Teenagers in today’s age, seem to be navigating down the path of self-consciousness because of the media causing them to take a certain image. For example, many young girls look up to the Kardashian’s and Jenner’s as their role model. Kylie Jenner still being a teenager, physically looks like a woman in her 20s due to many surgeries and her lifestyle, and everyone praises her for it. Because of everyone praising her appearance and ways of being, it has led to young adolescents and teenage girls to go down the path of wanting to be just like her. Young girls wanting to look just as Kylie Jenner go through the process of not accepting themselves and their physique leading to mental and health issues such as depression and dieting.
